I’m sure you’re wondering about the price.  I did too. 

Surprisingly enough, retail price is a bit less than $600. I was expecting a retail price in the range of $700-$900. As you know by now, my hard disk is “submerged” with photos that I took during my photographic outings and also from my trips to one of the best place to be on the planet, Scotland.

So I’m always on the look for new avenues to display my photos.

This line of thoughts recently led me to a book written by well known artist and photographer Martin Hurley titled “A Mini-Guide To Using Ebay & CafePress To Sell Your Photography“.

In the introduction, Martin declares that the Ebay CafePress idea did not originate from him, but he adapted same with his own twist , and added screen grabs in the book to illustrate the process.

“I have also used the idea with success. It does work. You don’t need to limit yourself to just framed photos though. You can list anything pretty much on Ebay with your photography on it.”

I purchased the book and read through the clearly written 26 pages in less time than it takes to cook my favorite dessert commonly called ”far breton” here in the French-speaking province of Quebec . The recipe originates from Brittany and is called :   “farz fourn”.  But I disgress here…let’s get back to photography.

Wow…I am truly impressed by this reading. It cannot be more easier than this to set-up and run a photography business to sell photos online! This is exciting.

1. Log into your Photobucket account, or, of you haven’t done so yet, register for an account.

2. Hover your cursor over the “All Albums” tab then click on “Create new album”

3. On the left-most column, you’ll find an Albums box. Use this box to create a new album for the photo you’d like to upload. Or, choose an existing album where you’d like the photo to be uploaded.

4. Click the “Upload images & videos” button

5. Select the photo you want to upload. You can upload either from your computer, another website, mobile phone or email.

6. Wait for the photo to upload. Afterwards, enter the title, description and tags for your picture. In the same screen, you can share the photo on MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, Blogger, email and other sites.

7. Finally, click either “Return to album” or “Add tags to all albums.”

As you can see, it’s pretty easy. Photobucket even lets you share your pictures through printed products, slideshows, scrapbooks and online galleries.

As a hands down experiment, I uploaded 8 photos from my “Garden Benches” photography collection.

I then created a slide show with these photos.

A few days ago, in the optometrist’s waiting room, I grabbed a french magazine on a nearby stand. What a surprise to discover it was about photography! 

Great articles and many product reviews. One in particular caught my attention: the rapid camera strap RS-4 from BlackRapid.

It wasn’t the strap itself that draw me to read the entire product review but moreso the first sentence of the article:

“Non, bien sûr que non, je ne suis pas en lacune de matériel pour que j’en vienne à écrire à propos d’une courroie photographique. Mais la conception est tellement efficace, tellement simple, qu’on se demande pourquoi cette étincelle d’intelligence ne s’est pas manifestée avant aujourd’hui. (…) ” Jean-Francois Landry.

Let me translate, to my best, in english:

“No, of course, it is not because I am in lack of subjects that I come to write about a camera strap. But the conception is so efficient, so simple, that we ask ourselves how come this spur of intelligence took so long to materialize itself..(…)

 As described on the site, the R-Strap is worn diagonally across the torso from shoulder to hip and is ajustable to fit most photographers. The locking FastenR connects the R-Strap to the tripod socket of camera or lens. The camera hangs upside down, resting securely at your side or in your back, lens pointing behind you.

A perfect solution to the frequent neck pains when on trips shooting all day long.

If you are looking for a camera that is powerful, but compact, you should take a look at the Canon Powershot SD 1100 IS. This is a casual camera (not designed for professional photographers), but it is still very powerful.

It takes photos at 8 Mega Pixels, which is the current “big” for your average camera. 10 megapixel cameras are also cropping up, but of course are going to cost more. It is small and compact, and very easy to use. Having only a small experience using digital cameras (you understand how to turn one on and how to take a picture), you should be able to use the Canon Powershot SD 1100 IS.

One of the biggest benefits to this little camera is that it has advanced digital technologies that allow a beginner to take stunning photographs. It can work in any situation, spanning from a warm sunny day to a dark night (especially with the help of the built-in flash). The camera is fast to startup, so if you need to take a quick shot you won’t miss anything.

The Canon Powershot SD 1100 IS is built out of sturdy aluminum, so it can survive a bit of a rough trip around town in your purse or bag. The bright 2.5” LCD screen is great for viewing what you are photographing or viewing photographs taken in the past. Most digital cameras these days have around a 2.5” LCD screen, so this feature probably isn’t that exciting.

Although this camera has many high points, it isn’t a perfect camera. It is, though, a great camera for the price tag it wears. If you are more than the casual photographer, it probably isn’t the camera for you. It doesn’t offer the extreme control that some photo experts may desire. However, if you’re just snapping photos for fun and to keep up with the family then you shouldn’t have a problem.

You may need to purchase an SD Card to go along with this compact camera as it can only hold around 240 images with the built in memory. This is a decent amount, but if you plan on taking many photos before exporting them to your computer you may want to expand. The camera also might have trouble taking images of high-speed situations, such as sporting events. Photographs taken may appear blurry, as with any other camera.

Overall, the Canon Powershot SD 1100 IS is a great camera at a great price. As always, you might seek something more powerful, but this camera should fulfill the needs of a casual photographer.
