A Call for Ethical Online Presence
Building Trust Online: The Ethical Path to Visibility
Recently, insights from a colleague highlighting the frenzied pursuit of visibility that tends to result in a tumult of competing voices, all clamoring for notice, struck a chord with me and prompted me to ponder the foundational principles that have steered my path as an online visibility and content optimisation strategist since 2011.
This week again, I encountered a disturbing trend: the mirage of instant solutions. We’re swamped with propositions that claim to effortlessly produce product reviews, construct websites through simple voice commands, and even generate complete video courses at the mere press of a button. The linking thread in all these? Generative AI.
But here lies the problem, and it’s a significant one: these products fail to create anything of genuine value. As my passionate colleague accurately highlighted, automated courses lack personal insights or experiences, and machine-written “product reviews” contain no beneficial information, revealing the emptiness of these claims.
Don’t get me wrong, while it’s clear that AI can serve as a powerful tool for many varied tasks such as transcribing podcasts or aiding in research, the belief that value can emerge from minimal effort and automation is misleading. For content marketers, giving in to the temptation of effortless “push-button” options risks watering down our distinctive voices.
It’s tempting to fall into the trap of using these tools indiscriminately, especially when they promise to streamline our work or amplify our online presence. However, the distinction between using technology as an assistant versus letting it replace the human element is where the ethical line blurs.
Ultimately, the goal is to utilize technology not as a crutch for generating quantity but as a means to enrich the quality of our contributions.
In the pursuit of visibility and success, the most enduring results stem from a commitment to ethics, authenticity, and the relentless pursuit of excellence.
Top Benefits of Working With AI for Content Creators
Efficiency and Productivity Boost
AI helps us coming up with cool ideas and spinning awesome stories. It speeds up the whole process of getting our content out there, all while keeping the quality top-notch. Plus, it handles the boring stuff, like crunching numbers and tweaking things for better search results, so we, as creators, can stick to doing what we love most, i.e creating content.
Enhanced Creativity and Personalization
AI can spot the latest trends, figure out what our audience loves, and see how our content’s doing. This means we get cool insights that help us make our content even more tailored and creative for our audience.
Improved Content Quality and SEO
AI-powered buddies make sure our content shines by offering friendly grammar nudges, style tips, and making our writing easy to digest. As our personal SEO detectives, scoping out keywords, backlinks, and what the competition’s up to, they can help us climb the ranks in search engine results.
So, I keep saying it, over and over, to anyone who’ll listen – my clients, friends, you name it. Our content, whether it’s written, audio, or video, needs to do three key things: inform, educate, and help our audiences. These are the cornerstones of truly valuable content that reflects our expertise, insights, and personal experiences. That’s what sets us apart from the empty hype of easy content creation, with or without AI’s assistance. It’s a choice we’re free to make, and it’s one I stand by firmly.
Are you with me?
Our pursuit of online visibility must be rooted in ethics. We want to be remembered and respected for the richness and integrity of our contributions. Now more than ever, our communities seek guidance from voices that are not just loud but clear, resonant, and genuine. Let us, therefore, commit to being those voices.
This quote emphasizes the importance of genuine innovation and vision in creating valuable and impactful content and products, rather than relying solely on automated processes or overwhelming consumer input. It can resonate well with the discussion about maintaining authenticity and human insight in the face of generative AI.

Thanks for such an excellent post. As an online entrepreneur myself, I’ve been watching with keen interest the explosion of generative AI tools. I have somewhat of a love/hate relationship with them. As you said, oftentimes what they generate is more of the same type of garbage that we’re already awash in.
However, I’ve also learned that if I work properly with them, they’ll come up with excellent material. I’ve learned that the way to do that is use prompts that lead them where I want them to go. I can’t just say, “I want you to write a 1,500 word blog post on X.”
I’ve attempted to do that multiple times. It never works. I get nothing but AI speak with terms like “realm,”, “embark,” and “in the world of…” But if I say something like, “I want to write a blog post on Y. Please give me some ideas for topics,” it will often come back with good ideas. Then I can continue with something like, “I really like point 1. Please expand on that.”
If I then continue in that way, eventually I’ll have enough good material for a 1,500 word blog post or more.
Thank you so much Rick for your thoughtful comment and for being part of the conversation! I’m glad you found the post valuable. All the very best, Janice
