Why Owning Your Website Still Matters in 2026
Why Owning Your Website Still Matters in 2026 – And How to Build One Without the Tech Overwhelm
Relying too heavily on a single online platform has always carried a certain amount of risk.
Algorithms change. Reach fluctuates. Platforms evolve. Features disappear. And increasingly, the way people discover businesses is changing too, through search engines, social platforms and now AI-powered recommendations.
There is one digital asset, however, that remains at the center of it all:
Your website
A website gives your business a home you can build upon, a place where people can discover who you are, understand what you do, explore your expertise, join your email list and decide whether they want to work with you.
And unlike your presence on a social platform, you control it.
I’ve been building my online presence with WordPress since 2008
When I began my own online journey in 2008, I could never have imagined how many different directions it would eventually take me.Over the years, I’ve built and contributed to WordPress websites across completely different niches.
There’s my business and marketing home at JaniceDugas.com.
There’s DiscoverTopicalStampCollecting, com, where I share one of my longtime passions.
There’s Scotiana, com our collaborative exploration of Scotland, its history, culture and landscapes.
And there’s CandlesBook.com, an online shop devoted to literary wall art inspired by classic books.
Business. Hobbies. Publishing. Ecommerce.
Very different purposes, but WordPress has provided the foundation for all of them. That experience taught me something important:
You don’t have to be a web developer to build something meaningful online.
You need the right tools, the willingness to learn and, especially when you’re starting out, good guidance.
Why I still believe in self-hosted WordPress
I’ve always preferred self-hosted WordPress, WordPress.org rather than WordPress.com, because it gives me tremendous flexibility to create, experiment and grow without having to rebuild my entire online presence every time my business evolves.
Your website can begin simply. Then it can grow with you.
A blog can become a knowledge library.
A simple services website can become a lead-generation hub.
An interest can grow into a community.
A small online shop can develop into a substantial collection.
That’s the beauty of building on a foundation you control. And if you’ve been telling yourself…
‘ I’d love my own website, but I’m just not technical enough.’
I want to introduce you to someone who has spent years proving otherwise.
Meet Christina Hills and the Website Creation Workshop
Christina Hills created the Website Creation Workshop specifically to help non-techies learn how to build and manage their own WordPress websites. Her Fall 2026 Website Creation Workshop opens for enrollment on September 30, 2026.
What I particularly appreciate about Christina’s approach is that she doesn’t simply tell you what buttons to click. She teaches you how your website works.
You’ll learn hands-on using self-hosted WordPress, with step-by-step training, assignments and live group coaching designed to take you through the process of creating your own site.

A safe place to learn by doing
One of the biggest obstacles for many would-be website owners is fear.
*What if I click the wrong thing?*
*What if I break something?*
*What if everyone can see my mistakes?*
Christina’s teaching environment is designed to remove much of that anxiety. You learn by actually doing the work, step by step, rather than watching endless tutorials and wondering how everything fits together.
That’s important because building your own website gives you something even more valuable than the finished site: It gives you confidence.
Instead of being completely dependent on someone else every time you want to change a page, publish an article or develop a new idea, you begin to understand and manage your own digital home.
Your website matters even more in the AI era
There’s another reason I believe owning a strong website matters so much today. The Internet is moving from an era of simply being found to one in which businesses also need to be understood and trusted.
Search engines, AI systems, potential clients and referral partners all need clear signals about who you are, what you know, whom you help and why your expertise matters.
-Your website gives all of that information a central home.
-Social media can introduce people to you.
-Your email list can nurture the relationship.
-Search can help people discover you.
-AI may increasingly recommend you.
But your website is where all those roads can meet.
That’s why I don’t see a website as simply another marketing channel. I see it as the foundation of your digital presence.
Is 2026 the year you finally build yours?
Perhaps you’ve been putting off creating your website. Or perhaps you already have one, but you’ve reached the point where you’d like to understand it better and take more control over it. Either way, Christina’s upcoming workshop may be exactly the encouragement and guidance you’ve been waiting for.
The Fall 2026 Website Creation Workshop opens for enrollment September 30, 2026.

Don’t wait for the next algorithm change or platform shake-up to remind you how important ownership is. Build an online home that represents you, your expertise and the people you are here to serve.
To Your Prosperity,
Janice
P.S.One of the greatest benefits of learning to manage your own website isn’t technical at all. It’s freedom ; the freedom to publish an idea, create a new page, test an offer or take your business in a new direction without wondering whether a platform will allow it.
P.S.S :Three things worth remembering:
Diversification protects you. Your business shouldn’t depend entirely on the reach or rules of one platform.
Ownership gives you options. A self-hosted website provides a digital foundation you can develop as your business changes.
Your website connects the ecosystem. Content, search, social media, your email list and AI discovery can all lead people back to one place where they can understand who you are and how you can help.
“The best way to predict the future is to create it.”
