Mission First: A No-BS Framework for Achieving Your Goals
Cut the Excuses, Define Your Mission, and Make It Happen
I recently came across an inspiring talk by Lisa Bilyeu, where she broke down the importance of putting **Mission First** in a way that was clear, actionable, and completely free of fluff. Her insights on defining your mission, setting aligned goals, and cutting through self-deception resonated deeply with me.
It made me realize how many people, including myself, sometimes set goals without first ensuring they truly align with our bigger purpose.
That’s why I decided to write this listicle in a way to distill Lisa’s **Mission First** framework into a structured, shareable guide that can help us take real, no-BS action toward our success.
In a world full of distractions and self-doubt, Lisa Bilyeu’s approach to goal setting and execution is a breath of fresh air. She breaks it down in her book Radical Confidence and in her teachings.
Let’s summarize her insights into a simple framework that will provide actionable steps we can take today to move closer to our mission-driven success.
The Mission First Framework
Lisa highlights the importance of defining your mission first before setting your goals. Without a clear mission, goals can feel arbitrary and lack the emotional drive needed to push through obstacles.
Step 1: Define Your Mission (The Who, What, and Why)
Before setting any goals, get crystal clear on your mission by answering these three questions:
- Who are you serving? (Who benefits from what you do?)
- What impact do you want to make? (What problem are you solving?)
- Why does this matter to you? (What drives your passion and commitment?)
💡 Example: If your mission is to help small business owners grow online, your Who might be entrepreneurs, your What could be providing marketing strategies, and your Why could be your passion for seeing people succeed on their own terms.
Step 2: Align Goals to Your Mission (The What, How Much, and By When)
Once your mission is clear, set specific, measurable goals that align with it. Lisa recommends using the following criteria:
- What do you need to accomplish to serve your mission?
- How much do you need to do to make it happen?
- By when do you need to achieve it?
💡 Example: If your mission is to help entrepreneurs improve visibility, a goal might be: “Publish 10 high-quality blog posts in the next three months to attract 1,000 visitors.”
Step 3: No BS – What Would It Actually Take?
This is where radical honesty comes into play. Lisa Bilyeu challenges us to face reality—not wishful thinking.
Ask yourself:
- What does it actually take to achieve my goal?
- Where am I today, and where do I need to go?
- What are the real, actionable steps I need to take?
⚠️ Reality Check: If you set a goal to make 20 cold calls a day but know you lack the confidence, don’t kid yourself. Instead, start smaller—perhaps with five calls per day—and build up as your confidence grows.
Step 4: Break It Down & Stay Accountable
Lisa encourages breaking goals into small, daily, or weekly steps so they feel achievable.
- Micro-goals: What can you do today to move forward?
- Accountability: How will you track your progress?
- Adjustments: Are you willing to tweak your approach when needed?
💡 Example: If your goal is to publish 10 blog posts, break it down into writing one per week, setting deadlines, and tracking progress.
Step 5: Keep Revisiting Your Mission
When obstacles arise (and they will), remind yourself of your mission.
Your mission fuels your persistence. Whenever you feel stuck, ask:
- Am I still aligned with my mission?
- Are my goals helping me achieve it?
- Do I need to readjust my approach?
