Thinking Long Term Matters to Build Your Future
Think Long Term: Building the Future We Dare to Imagine
One of the most powerful reminders I’ve received lately came from Brendon Burchard’s Daily Fire: think long term.
Too often, we get caught in the cycle of urgent tasks, quick wins, or short-term frustrations. But if we want a long, healthy, productive, and successful life, we have to lift our gaze beyond the day, the week, or even the year. We have to see the future we want—even if it feels impossible, and dare to dwell on it until it becomes real.
Brendon challenged us to create a battle board for our future and to write down 5 big things we are going to do, each with a deadline.
My 5 Big Goals Before December 31, 2025
I took the challenge to heart, and here are my own long-term dreams:
-
Write three books
-
On SEO, to help entrepreneurs grow their visibility.
-
On meditation, to deepen spiritual practice.
-
On topical stamp collecting and philately, one of my lifelong passions.
-
-
Create a membership site
The Janice Dugas Learning Centre—a home for online business growth and recurring revenue. -
Teach A Course in Miracles
To share the wisdom that has transformed my perspective on life. -
Play “Amazing Grace” on guitar
Because music is another form of prayer and self-expression. -
Read one book per week
To stay nourished, inspired, and continually learning.
Ambitious? Absolutely. But with vision, discipline, and community, I believe it’s possible.
The Community Speaks
What touched me most was how others in GrowthDay are dreaming boldly, too. Here are just a few of the inspiring visions shared:
-
Karen reminded us: “The future is better than you think, but you better think about it.”
-
Sarah envisions building her coaching business, buying a farm, hosting retreats, and leaving a financial legacy for her children.
-
Tamiko dreams of becoming a keynote speaker, taking a Mediterranean cruise, and writing a book.
-
Brianne shared how even in the cold mornings, she listens to Daily Fire and commits to being the director of her life: “Determining and deciding what I want to build and committing to contemplating and making decisions through the lens of my future every day.”
-
Todd is working on finalizing his battle board, preparing for retirement, and setting health goals.
-
Adrienne captured the essence beautifully: “It’s always easier not to think about your future… but practice acknowledging it, visualizing it, and getting comfortable with it. The future is better than you think—but you’ve got to dream about it.”
-
May outlined practical steps: journal, visualize, meditate, dwell on the future, and above all—get comfortable thinking about it.
From wanting to visit kangaroos in Australia, to decluttering decades of storage, to teaching, traveling, building businesses, or simply making a house a home, the common thread is courage.
Why Thinking Long Term Matters
Short-term thinking can make us impulsive and reactive. Sometimes that’s useful—listening to our bodies or seizing an opportunity in the moment. But if we live only in the short term, we risk staying stuck in cycles of stress and complacency.
Long-term thinking gives us perspective. It builds optimism, energy, motivation, and drive. It helps us become builders, not just reactors.
As Frode put it:
“Invest in your future by building today. Every small step you take compounds over time, leading to the extraordinary life you envision.”
A Challenge for You
Take a moment to ask yourself:
-
Who do you want to become?
-
What do you want your health, family, finances, and legacy to look like?
-
What five big things will you commit to, and by when?
Write them down. Put them where you’ll see them every day. Create your battle board. Visualize the life you’re building.
Because the future is better than you think, but you’ve got to think about it.
To Your Fulfilled Future!
