Visibility and Hashtags on LinkedIn
What Solopreneurs Need to Know About LinkedIn Post Visibility
Over the past few months, I’ve been hearing from many solopreneurs — coaches, consultants, creators — that hashtags on LinkedIn just don’t have the same impact they used to. A few years ago, adding #entrepreneurship, #smallbusiness, or #marketingtips felt essential. Today? Not really.
The reach isn’t what it once was, because LinkedIn has changed the way its algorithm “listens.”
Instead of relying heavily on hashtags, LinkedIn now pays more attention to the actual words in your post, especially the first two or three lines. It looks at context: the services you mention, the industries you serve, the cities you name, the problems you solve.
So instead of relying only on #businesscoach, it’s more effective to write something like:
“This week, I worked with a group of small business owners in Toronto to help them refine their content strategy. We focused on clarifying their messaging, simplifying their social media plan, and building confidence in showing up online. It was inspiring to see the breakthroughs they had in just a few hours.”
This type of post already does the work. It highlights the audience, the location, the service, and even shares a personal reflection. That’s exactly the kind of detail LinkedIn favors in 2025.
Are Hashtags Dead?
Not completely. They still work when used with intention. One to three well-placed hashtags can connect your post to a larger conversation or emphasize a theme.
For example, if you post about productivity, #TimeManagementTips could be useful. If you’re sharing insights on mindset or resilience, #GrowthMindset or #EntrepreneurLife might help connect your content to a wider audience.
But those long strings of hashtags at the bottom? They no longer add much value and can even make your post look cluttered or inauthentic.
What Works Better Than Hashtags
Here’s what I’ve seen work best for solopreneurs, both in my own experience and from peers on LinkedIn:
-
Start strong. Lead with one or two short sentences that set the tone and grab attention. Keep it authentic and in your own voice.
-
Use natural keywords. For example: “Helping solopreneurs in Montreal streamline their marketing” or “Coaching session on personal branding for new consultants.”
-
Write like you speak. If you wouldn’t say it in a casual conversation, don’t force it into your post.
-
Encourage interaction. End with a reflection, a tip, or a question that invites your audience to respond.
Engagement is now the ultimate signal. If someone comments, shares, or simply spends time reading your post (dwell time), LinkedIn interprets that as a sign of relevance.
Which means: it’s far more powerful to hold your reader’s attention for a few seconds than to stack a dozen hashtags.
What Really Matters for Solopreneurs
At the end of the day, this isn’t about tricking the algorithm — it’s about showing up clearly and intentionally.
Be specific about:
-
What you do
-
Who you help
-
Where you are (or the market you serve)
When you speak in your own words and let your expertise shine through, people notice. Not just the algorithm, but the real decision-makers, collaborators, and clients who might click, comment, or reach out.
Still Not Sure Where to Start?
If adjusting your LinkedIn style feels overwhelming, or you’d like help rewriting one of your posts for clarity and impact, know that you’re not alone. Many solopreneurs are still navigating how to stand out on a crowded platform.
The good news? With a few small shifts — less reliance on hashtags, more focus on natural keywords and authentic storytelling — your content can cut through the noise.
