How Often Should You Really Update Your Blog?
How Often Should You Update Blog Content?
Have you ever heard this advice floating around:
“If you don’t post to your blog every single day, nobody’s going to read it.”
Honestly? That couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, if you’re just starting out and trying to grow your audience, posting daily might actually be one of the worst moves you can make.
Let me explain.
You Don’t Need More Content, You Need More Readers
When you’re under the 1,000-reader mark, your main job isn’t publishing post after post, it’s building an audience.
Because here’s the reality: more content doesn’t automatically equal more readers.
Sure, extra posts give you more chances to rank in search engines or get shared on social media.
But if your blog is brand new, the chances of that happening are slim.
Why?
-
A new blog doesn’t have enough backlinks yet to rank well.
-
A new blog doesn’t have enough followers yet to spread the word.
So if you’re writing only for your own little corner of the internet, those beautifully crafted posts may sit there unseen.
What You Really Need: Exposure
Instead of spending all your energy cranking out daily content, shift your focus toward getting your name out there. Exposure will do far more for your growth than another 500-word blog post gathering dust.
Think of it this way: every time someone in your niche sees your name on another blog, in an interview, or in the press, that’s a new doorway leading back to your site.
How to Get Your First 1,000 Readers
If you want to grow faster, shift your energy from writing more posts to putting yourself where your ideal readers already hang out. Here are three powerful ways to do that:
1. Write guest posts
Contribute to established blogs in your niche. Their readers discover you, and you instantly gain credibility by being featured as a trusted voice.
👉 For example, I was recently featured on Lorene Troyer’s blog, where I shared tips on keeping subscribers engaged. Guest posting works like a warm introduction, you’re showing up where your future audience is already paying attention.
2. Do interviews
Whether on podcasts, YouTube, or other blogs, interviews are pure gold. They put you in the spotlight, your story, your expertise, your voice. People connect with you as a person, not just with a piece of content, which makes them more likely to check you out afterward.
3. Land media mentions
This one can feel a little intimidating, but it’s worth the effort. Pay attention to who’s being quoted in your industry and look for ways to get included too. Journalists are always searching for fresh expert voices, so don’t be afraid to step forward.
Start with just one of these strategies this week, and you’ll be amazed how quickly momentum builds once people begin discovering you.
So, How Often Should You Update Your Blog?
At the beginning, a few times a month is plenty. Each post can then work as your “home base” while you’re out gaining exposure elsewhere.
The real secret is making sure your site is ready to capture readers when they arrive. That means:
-
Offering a simple, irresistible lead magnet (like a checklist or guide).
-
Building your email list (because email is still king for staying connected).
-
Making it super easy for visitors to stay in touch with you.
If you focus on that, you won’t just get random hits, you’ll start building a loyal readership.
The Bottom Line
Blogging daily won’t get you far if no one is there to read it. What will? Exposure. Networking. Getting your name seen and heard in the right places.
So don’t stress about publishing every day. Publish smart, not more. And use the time you free up to go out there and build the connections that will bring readers back to your site again and again.
